When the U.S. launched its military campaign in Iraq in the name of democracy, it announced at the same time a 'war of ideas,' a marketing campaign to export American values worldwide. Democracy has become a global brand.
The exhibition OURS: Democracy in the Age of Branding is an interdisciplinary investigation of democracy positioned as a consumer brand. It inaugurates the first fall season for the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Gallery at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons The New School for Design, and harks back to the beginnings of The New School, founded in 1919 in order to bring academic research to bear on the moral and material advancement of people. Today, such a practice-oriented approach makes the exhibition the natural receptacle for trends in contemporary art and design practice that emphasize interdisciplinary collaborations, the (virtual) social and political agency of the Web, and knowledge production. The exhibition is guest-curated by Carin Kuoni and organized and produced by Parsons The New School for Design, in collaboration with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.
